UAB Beach Defeats No. 20 Georgia State, Falls to rv FGCU

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – The UAB beach volleyball team defeated No. 20 Georgia State 4-1 then fell in heartbreaking fashion to Florida Gulf Coast 3-2 on the opening day of the FAU Invitational at Pompano Beach.
UAB 4, No. 20 GEORGIA STATE 1
The Blazers notched their first ranked win of the season with a decisive 4-1 victory over the Panthers.
The first flight got UAB off to a hot start as both Court 4 and Court 5 won for the Blazers, giving them a 2-0 lead heading into courts 1-3.
Pairing together for the first time this season, Kléa Sirois and Lauren Cairo shook off a slow start to win in three sets, 12-21, 21-11, 15-10.
Addison Atkins and Ashley Torsone also won their match on Court 5 in three sets, 19-21, 21-10, 16-14 for the 2-0 lead.
UAB's Court 1 pair of Jasmine Haas and Olivia Stant sealed the match by cruising to a 21-14, 21-13 victory. Court 3 followed with a three-set victory as Isabel Day and Claudia Stockard won 19-21, 21-12, 15-13. GSU took Court 2, but the match was already decided in favor of the Blazers.

Just like the first match, Courts 4 and 5 got the job done as UAB raced out to a 2-0 lead.
Sirois and Cairo were victorious 21-18, 21-17 on Court 4, followed by Atkins and Torsone winning another three-setter, 22-20, 16-21, 15-13. Atkins and Torsone are now 10-2 together and 5-0 in three set matches.
However, FGCU rallied on courts one, two and three to win the match 3-2. With the match tied, FGCU won the third set on Court 1 by the score of 20-18 for the team win.
UAB returns to action on Saturday against Tampa and No. 13 Florida Atlantic. First serve vs. Tampa is set for 8 a.m. ET/7 a.m. CT.
