UAB Beach Volleyball Splits at South Carolina

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team split two games on Saturday at the Wheeler Beach Bash with a 5-0 win over Austin Peay and a narrow 3-2 loss at South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.
The Blazers (4-3) breezed past Austin Peay with a straight set sweep for its third-straight 5-0 win and in the process registered the program's 150th victory.
UAB then almost sprung the upset over South Carolina, but lost closely contested matches on courts two, three and four to fall 3-2.
Against the Gamecocks, Addison Atkins and Ashley Torsone registered their fourth-straight win with a 21-14, 22-20 victory on Court 5 to help the Blazers tie the match at 1-1 after the first flight of action.
As the match moved to courts 1-3, Isabel Day and Claudia Stockard fell on Court 2 by a combined four points (22-20, 21-19), while Klea Sirois and Olivia Chychrun almost forced a third set on Court 3, but ultimately fell in straight sets, 21-14, 26-24.
UAB's Court 1 pair of Olivia Stant and Jasmine Haas ran their winning streak to six straight with a 21-17, 24-22 on the top court, but SC had already secured three courts for the team win.
After dropping their first match of the season, Stant and Haas have reeled off six straight wins and have a team-best record of 6-1 this season.
The Blazers host The March To May next weekend for their home opener at Blazer Beach on March 7-8. UAB opens the tournament on Friday, March 7 at 11:30 against Houston Christian, and will also play EKU (Friday, 3 p.m.), North Alabama (Saturday, 12 p.m.) and New Orleans (Saturday, 4 p.m.)
