Weathersby Leads Blazers to 86-80 Win Against Charlotte

BIRMINGHAM – Jade Weathersby scored a career-high 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the paint to lead UAB women's basketball (15-9, 6-6 AAC) to an 86-80 win against Charlotte (7-15, 2-9 AAC) on Saturday afternoon.
Weathersby also hit a scoring milestone, earning 500 career points early in the first quarter with a layup. Maddie Walsh recorded 20 points, while Tracey Bershers tallied 14 points. Molly Moffitt also scored in double digits with 12 points.
The 49ers took the control of the first quarter shooting 53 percent. The Blazers were able to keep the game close, but Charlotte was able to score with eight seconds left and had an 11-point lead at 25-14 to end the first.
To begin the second, the 49ers continued to extend their lead, but at the 5:41 mark UAB began an 11-0 run to cut into Charlotte's lead. The Green and Gold were able to get within four (33-29) of the 49ers with 3:43 remaining. Charlotte scored the next five points, but the Blazers then used a 7-0 run to make the score 38-36 with 1:05 left. As the clock was counting down, the 49ers made a jump shot to lead 40-36 to end the second quarter.
UAB tied the game at 41-41 early in the third and was then able to tie it again at 42-42. Sara Bershers was able to give UAB the lead off a free throw and then extend the lead at 45-42 with a jump shot. The Green and Gold shot 53 percent in the third to give the Green and Gold a 64-59 lead going into the last frame. Weathersby provided 11 points and T. Bershers had eight points to assists in the Blazers big third quarter.
Weathersby was the first to score in the fourth, but Charlotte scored the next six points to get within one (66-65) of UAB. The Blazers were able to extend their lead and were ahead 12 points (80-68) off an 12-2 run with 4:14 remaining. The 12-point lead was the most the Green and Gold led by for the contest. At the 46 second mark, the 49ers had cut into UAB's lead by four (84-80) but were not able to capitalize on their opportunities to score. Walsh drew a foul and made both at the free throw line to give the Blazers the 86-80 victory.
For the game, The Green and Gold shot 52 percent and scored 30 points in the paint, 17 fast break points and 14 bench points. Charlotte shot 41 percent for the contest.

UAB travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to face Temple on Tuesday, February 11. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. CT and will air live on ESPN+.
