Women’s Basketball Falls 61-56 Against East Carolina

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (14-9, 5-6 AAC) fell at Bartow Arena against East Carolina (12-11, 4-7 AAC) by a score of 61-56.
Jade Weathersby led the Blazers with a career-high 22 points while adding seven rebounds. Sara Bershers registered 10 points during the contest.
The Pirates started off the game on a 14-3 run and continued to extend their lead by shooting 42 percent in the first. At the end of the first 10 minutes, ECU had a 12-point lead at 19-7. UAB had seven turnovers in the first quarter and East Carolina was able to score 12 points off the turnovers.
In the second, the Pirates continued to extend their lead and led as many as 19 points with 3:31 left to play. The Blazers then went on a 7-0 run done entirely by Weathersby to end the quarter down by 12 at 32-20.
UAB had a big third quarter and shot 58 percent to cut into East Carolina's lead. Weathersby scored nine of her 22 points in the third while Bershers had five, Eleecia Carter recorded four and Maddie Walsh added three to round out the Blazers big third quarter. The Green and Golds defense was able to hold the Pirates to 4-of-19 shooting to only be down by two (43-41) at the end of the frame.
In the final frame each team went back and forth for a close game, but East Carolina still remained in front. With 39 second left, Weathersby made a layup and earned an and one to get within two at 58-56 after her made free throw. ECU made a three to go up 59-56 and Tracey Bershers had a chance to tie the game from deep with five seconds left but missed. The Pirates were then fouled and made both free throws to earn the five-point win.

The Blazers at back at Bartow Arena on Saturday, February 8 to host Charlotte. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT and will air live on ESPN+.
