Men’s Basketball Faces Wichita State in Road Test

BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball (18-9, 11-3 AAC) will travel to Wichita State (17-10, 7-7 AAC) on Thursday to take on the Shockers, who have won six-straight games. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CT.

SERIES HISTORY
The Shockers lead the all-time series over the Blazers by a margin of 5-1. UAB and Wichita State split their two meetings last season with the Shockers winning in Birmingham by a score of 74-66 before the Blazers downed WSU in their first game at the American Conference Tournament by a score of 72-60. UAB will travel to Wichita for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
LAST TIME OUT
UAB defeated Temple by a score of 80-64 on Sunday afternoon, to keep its hold on second place in the conference standings. Bradley Ezewiro led the Blazers with 15 points and seven rebounds while both Yaxel Lendeborg and Ja'Borri McGhee each had double-doubles while both finishing just a few assists shy of a triple-double.
YAX SEASON
Yaxel Lendeborg is posting even more impressive numbers during his second year at UAB. He is averaging 17.8 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists so far this season for the Blazers, leading the team in each category. He is the third Blazer (Carlos Williams, Andy Kennedy) to open a season with three straight games with at least 20 points. Lendeborg earned AAC Player of the Week honors after averaging 23.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists in a pair of wins over Tulane and Florida Atlantic. He has also shown his ability to find his teammates, recording five or more assists in 13 games this season, including a streak of seven-straight games with at least five assists. Lendeborg set the UAB program record with 38 career double-doubles and has 19 on the season, tying his single-season program record that he set last season.
APPROACHING HISTORY
The Blazers have won 119 games over the last five seasons, approaching a program record for the most wins over any five-year stretch. The previous record of 120 was set from 2019-24. UAB has surpassed the most wins over a five-year stretch with one head coach, previously set from 1981-86 when the Blazers won 117 games under Gene Bartow.
GET TO THE LINE
The Blazers were one of the best teams in the country at getting to the charity stripe in 2023-24, finishing eighth in the country in free throws made per game at 17.8. This year, the Blazers are again getting to the free throw line at a high rate. UAB is 75th in the nation with 15.5 free throws made per game and 43rd in the country at 76.2 percent from the charity stripe.
CRASH THE BOARDS
This season, UAB is again among the top rebounding teams in the nation, ranking 9th in the country in rebounds per contest with 40.7. UAB is especially strong on the offensive glass with 15.0 offensive boards per game, which is second in the nation. The Blazers grab 39.0 percent of their misses on the offensive end, which is the fifth best rate in the country. Yaxel Lendeborg led the team in rebounding last season with 10.6 per game and is again averaging double figures on the glass. He has grabbed 15 or more rebounds in 13 games as a Blazer, including a 21-rebound game vs. Florida Atlantic which ranks second in program history.
