Blazers Fall in Overtime Battle at East Carolina, 88-87

GREENVILLE, N.C. – UAB women's basketball (7-6, 0-1 American) came up short in a dramatic overtime battle at East Carolina (9-5, 1-0 American), falling 88-87 on Tuesday night at Minges Coliseum to begin conference play.

Four Blazers scored in double figures with Monae' Duffy leading the way by registering 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for a double-double. Cali Smallwood recorded 19 points while Sofia Munoz tallied 16 points, five rebounds and four assists. Molly Moffitt came away with 12 points and five rebounds. Journey Armstead led UAB with 11 assists and added seven points.

The Pirates were led by Keanna Rembert with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Savannah Brooks recorded 13 points and Kennedy Fauntleroy tallied 12 points.

Game Notes

Duffy (22 points), Smallwood (19 points), Munoz (16 points) and Moffitt (12 points) all scored in double figures to lead the UAB offense.
Smallwood recorded 500 career points when she made a jump shot early in the second quarter.
Smallwood scored 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Duffy tallied 19 rebounds for a career-best on top of 22 points for her third double-double of the season.
Duffy was 9-for-12 from field goal range and 14 of her 19 rebounds were defensive.
Armstead matched her career-high 11 assists and season-best two steals.
Eleecia Carter recorded a career-high three blocks on the night.
The Blazers shot 51 percent from the floor, making it the second-best percentage this season.
The game finished with nine lead changes and five tied scores.
The game marks the first time this season that UAB has gone into overtime.
East Carolina hit a three-pointer in overtime to seal the win.

How It Happened

The game started with both teams going back and forth, but UAB pulled away and led by seven [17-10].
Smallwood scored seven points in the opening frame.
The Blazers scored 16 points in the paint in the first quarter alone.
UAB closed the frame on an 8-2 run to take a 24-16 lead.
Smallwood opened the second quarter with a jump shot to record her 500^th career point [26-16].
The Green and Gold extended its lead to 11 with strong interior play [30-19].
The Blazers held the Pirates to 20 percent shooting in the quarter.
UAB went into halftime with a 43-33 advantage after holding ECU without a field goal for over two minutes.
East Carolina opened the half on a quick run fueled by turnovers and were able to take the lead [46-45].
A late three-pointer pushed ECU's lead to double digits [65-54].
The Pirates scored 32 points in the quarter and shot 65 percent while UAB had 11 points in the frame.
The Green and Gold came out with defensive pressure and capitalized on offense to trail by nine [69-60].
UAB went on an 8-0 late in the frame to trail by one [74-73].
Smallwood tied the game with a three-pointer and 1:05 remaining [76-76].
The game was tied again with a layup from Moffitt with 32 seconds on the clock [78-78].
Both teams had chances but could not capitalize sending the game into overtime.
The Blazers outscored ECU 24-13 in the quarter.
In overtime, UAB had a six-point lead with 1:26 left in the game [84-78].
East Carolina was able to connect on two three-pointers and with 20 seconds left trailed by two after Duffy made a free throw and missed one [87-85].
With five seconds on the clock, the Pirates made a three to go up by one [88-87].
The Blazers had a chance to grab the win but came up short.
