UAB Dominates Southern Illinois in 27-point Win

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (4-4) dominated Southern Illinois (1-6) in an 81-54 victory on Wednesday morning at Bartow Arena.
Four Blazers scored in double figures with Molly Moffitt leading the Blazers with a career-high 25 points, while Cali Smallwood followed behind with 19 points. Sofia Munoz registered 14 points and a season-high eight rebounds, while Monae' Duffy registered 10 points.
Southern Illinois was led by Alayna Kraus with 14 points. Indya Green grabbed a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

- The Green and Gold made 15 three-pointers which is the most this season.
- UAB was 52 percent from the field (30-for-57), 47 percent from three (15-for-32) and 60 percent from the free throw line (6-for-10)
- The Green and Golds 53 percent from the field was the highest this season while shooting 47 percent from behind the arc was the second highest.
- Moffitt also recorded a career-high nine field goals and seven 3-pointers.
- Munoz tallied eight rebounds which is a season-high for the freshman.
- Journey Armstead registered a season-best nine assists and matched her season-high six rebounds, while also recording eight points.
- Eleecia Carter also had a season-best with six assists.
- UAB scored 26 points in the paint, 17 points off turnovers, 11 bench points and 10 points off fast breaks.
- Moffitt hit her first three of the game to give UAB its first points [4-3].
- The Blazers were able to take the lead, but the Salukis tied the game [10-10]
- UAB then went on an 11-0 run to close out the quarter and have an 11-point lead [21-10].
- The Green and Gold had a 16-point lead in the second quarter with 7:20 remaining [29-13].
- Smallwood scored six of her 19 points in the second, with Moffitt, Duffy, Munoz and Armstead all contributing in the quarter.
- UAB shot 40 percent from the field and 29 percent from the three to go into halftime with a 12-point lead [35-23].
- The beginning of the third quarter the game went back and forth, until Southern Illinois was able to get within five points with 2:00 minutes left [45-40].
- Smallwood made a three-pointer and a field goal, while Duffy had a layup to put UAB up by nine to end the quarter [52-43].
- UAB had an early 8-0 run to lead by 18 in the fourth quarter [65-47].
- The Blazers defense only allowed Southern Illinois to score seven points the rest of the quarter.
- UAB started a 16-3 run with 3:44 on the clock to earn the dominate 81-54 win.
- Freshman Mari Miller recorded a three to give UAB its 27-point win with 22 seconds left.
