UAB Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Samford, 65-49

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (7-5) defeated in-town foe Samford (6-9) 65-49 on Monday at Bartow Arena to close out non-conference play.

The Blazers had five players score in double figures with Molly Moffitt leading the way by recording 14 points while adding five rebounds and three assists. Monae' Duffy and Sofia Munoz both recorded 13 points each and Duffy led UAB with eight rebounds. Cali Smallwood came away with 12 points and six rebound, while Eleecia Carter totaled 11 points and seven rebounds.

Samford was led by Kaylee Yarbrough with 13 points while Aubrey Blankenship registered 10 points. Blankenship led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds.

Game Notes

Moffitt (14 points), Duffy (13 points), Munoz (13 points), Smallwood (12 points) and Carter (11 points) all scored in double figures to lead the UAB offense.
UAB hit 14-of-29 (.483) from beyond the arc, which tied for the second most threes in a game this season (Dec. 15 vs. Alcorn State).
Samford was held to just five points in the fourth quarter.
The Blazers finished with 19 assists on 24 made field goals.
UAB outscored the Bulldogs 18-8 in transition.
The Green and Gold forced 13 turnovers, converting them into 10 points.
The Blazers held the lead for 36:57 minutes of the game.
Moffitt totaled three assists which matched a career-high for the senior.
Smallwood matched her season-high two assists and one block.

UAB outrebounded the Bulldogs 39-33 while shooting 41 percent from the field, 48 percent from the three and 50 percent at the free throw line.
The Blazers held Samford to 36 percent shooting and 23 percent from the three.

How It Happened

Samford briefly led early (3-0), but the Blazers responded with a quick offensive rhythm [8-7].
UAB scored off turnovers and second-chance opportunities to seize momentum.
Duffy scored repeatedly in the paint, giving the Blazers steady early offense [15-12].
A three from Carter capped six straight points to close the quarter [21-14].
The Blazers shot 53 percent from the floor and 80 percent from beyond the arc in the opening 10 minutes.
Moffitt opened the second quarter with a three to push the lead to double digits [24-14].
The Bulldogs went on a mini run, cutting the margin to five midway through the period [29-24].
Munoz and Moffitt answered back with back-to-back threes to give UAB back a 10-point lead [36-26].
The Green and Gold continued the 10-point lead heading into halftime [38-28].
Samford struck first in the third, trimming the lead to eight [38-30].
UAB responded with a decisive 10-0 run, highlighted by Duffy, Smallwood and Moffitt [53-33].
The Blazers pushed the lead to its largest margin at 20 after the 10-0 run.
The Bulldogs steadied late, but UAB maintained full control heading to the fourth quarter [54-44].
Smallwood opened the quarter with a fast-break three to extend the lead [57-44].
Carter followed behind with a pull up three to make the lead 14 [60-46].
UAB's defense clamped down, holding Samford to just one point the rest of the quarter [65-49].
UAB closed out the game by limiting the Bulldogs to just five points in the final 10 minutes [65-49].
