Men’s Basketball Defeats UNC Asheville for Kennedy’s 400th Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB Men's Basketball team (9-4) beat UNC Asheville (6-8) 72-47 on Sunday Afternoon in Bartow Arena. KyeRon Lindsay-Martin led the Blazers with a game-high 24 points. Evan Chatman and Quaran McPherson added nine points each to help UAB in the win.
UNC Asheville had three players in double figures including a team-high 16 points from Toyaz Solomon.
Andy Kennedy 400 Wins
With the win today head coach Andy Kennedy got his 400th career win as a head coach. Kennedy is the 15th fastest active Division I coach to reach 400 wins in just 623 attempts. This was his 134th win at UAB in just six seasons with the Blazers. He has won three conference championships and made four NCAA Tournament appearances. He is the second all-time winningest coach in UAB's history behind Gene Bartow.
Game Notes
- Six Blazers scored points within the first nine minutes of the game (seven in the first half).
- UAB dominated points in the paint 46-26. UAB also dominated bench points, scoring 37 compared to the Bulldogs 16.
- UAB allowed just 47 total points, which is the lowest by any opponent all season.
- UNC Asheville had just four assists which is the lowest amount that UAB has allowed all season. The next closest was against Mississippi Valley State when they had nine assists. UAB also held the Bulldogs to just three three-point shots, which is the lowest amount all season.
- Lindsay-Martin put up his second best scoring performance of the season, scoring 24 points. He scored 25 against Southern Illinois on Nov. 24.
- The Blazers only turned the ball over five times, which is the lowest mark all season.
- UAB shot 44% from the field (28-for-63), 31% from three (4-for-13), and 67% from the free-throw line (12-for-18).
- Evan Chatman started the scoring for UAB with a lay in on the first possession [2-0].
- UNC Asheville went on a 6-0 run early in the first half, taking their first lead of the game [4-8].
- Chatman had six of UAB's first ten points.
- UAB regained the lead on an Ahmad Robinson three-point shot [14-12].
- The Blazers went on a 18-0 run when the score was 10-12 at the 15:57 mark. Five different players scored during that period [26-12]. UAB got 10 consecutive stops, forcing four turnovers during that span.
- The Bulldogs had two separate 4-0 runs late in the second half. They got back within 10 during the first run at the 4:14 mark [30-20].
- UAB closed out the half with five straight points, opening the lead back up to 16 [42-26].
- Westry scored four straight points out of the break [46-28].
- DJ Patrick scored four straight points, including his 9th point of the game at the 15:11 mark [51-37].
- KyeRon Lindsay-Martin scored six straight points himself during a four minute span, including a foul and the basket [57-42].
- Salim London hit a three-point shot and then Lindsay-Martin got fouled and made the basket for UAB's biggest lead of the game [67-44].
- Final score: UAB 72, UNC Asheville 47
- UAB will start conference play on Wednesday, Dec. 31 against Wichita State on ESPNU. Tippoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
