BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (6-5) earned a 24-point win with an 86-62 victory over Mississippi Valley State (1-10) on Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena.

The Blazers had four players score in double figures with Molly Moffitt leading UAB with 15 points while collected seven rebounds. Sofia Munoz tallied 14 points and three assists. Cali Smallwood registered 12 points and eight rebounds while Monae' Duffy collected 11 points and eight rebounds.

Mississippi Valley State had three players in double figures and was led by Desiree Smith with 17 points. Ariel Jefferson followed behind with 14 points and Sydnei Marshall recorded 11 points.

Game Notes

Moffitt (15 points), Munoz (14 points), Smallwood (12 points) and Duffy (11 points) all scored in double figures to lead the UAB offense.
The Blazers had the lead for 32:23 minutes of the game and used a strong second quarter to maintain its lead for the rest of the game.
In the second quarter UAB outscored MVSU 16-8 with six players contributing points.
UAB also outscored the Devilettes 26-15 in the third to break open the game even more.
Smallwood recorded a season-high eight rebounds with four of those coming in the second quarter.
Munoz matched her season-high four steals and led the Blazers in steals on the afternoon.
Jordan Rosier collected a season-best seven points and tied her season-high three rebounds.

The Blazers had 48 rebounds compared to Mississippi Valley State's 41.
UAB scored 46 points in the paint, 25 bench points, 20 points off turnovers and 12 fast break points.
The Green and Gold were 43 percent from the field and 86 percent at the free throw line.
UAB's defense held the Devilettes to 33 percent in the field and 17 percent from the long range.

How It Happened

Mississippi Valley State jumped out early, briefly taking a 5-0 lead.
UAB answered with strong interior play and second-chance points to regain control [16-13].
Duffy and Journey Armstead combined for six unanswered points to close out the quarter [22-16].
The first quarter saw three lead changes and two tied scores.
Defensive pressure forced multiple MVSU turnovers, leading to easy transition baskets.
Eleecia Carter knocked down a free throw to push the lead to double digits [32-22].
A pair of late free throws in the quarter extended the Blazers lead to 14 at halftime [38-24].
UAB came out of halftime firing, opening the half with a 7-0 run [48-25].
The Blazers scored on seven straight possessions midway through the quarter [55-28].
Aggressive drives and trips to the free throw line helped UAB build a lead as large as 29 points [60-31].
The Devilettes struggled to find rhythm as UAB's defense forced six turnovers and 12 offensive fouls.
In the fourth, MVSU was able to score on four straight possessions [82-60].
UAB responded with inside scoring and steady free throw shooting to maintain separation.
The Blazers rotated off the bench while continuing to control tempo.
UAB closed the game comfortably, sealing the 24-point win.
