BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (5-5) pulled away early against Alcorn State (3-6) in the 70-32 win on Monday night at Bartow Arena.

Cali Smallwood led the Blazers with 18 points, while Eleecia Carter registered 16 points. Molly Moffitt and Monae' Duffy led UAB with nine rebounds each. Sofia Munoz tallied nine points, five assists and four rebounds and Journey Armstead collected seven assists and six points.

Alcorn State was led by Jayda Bowen with seven points while Arene Iyekekpolor Kiarra Henderson followed behind with six points each.

Game Notes

Smallwood led all scorers with 18 points, connecting on six triples (6-for-8) to pace UAB's perimeter attack and knocked down six field goals (6-for-9).
Carter tallied 16 points, knocking down five three-pointers which matched her career-high.
Smallwood's six three-pointers matched her career high.
Munoz chipped in nine points and a team-high five assists.
UAB finished with 14 made three-pointers, accounting for 42 of its 70 points.
The Blazers 14 made 3-pointers were the second highest this season.
UAB's 38-point win was the highest this season.
The Blazers matched their highest lead ever held with 44 points in the fourth quarter.
The Green and Golds defense held the Braves to five points in the third quarter and seven points in the fourth.
UAB outscored Alcorn State 55-22 over the final three quarters.
The Blazers defense held the Braves to 20 percent in field goal range and 33 percent from behind the arc.
UAB shot 49 percent from the field, 50 percent from the three and 61 percent at the free throw line.

How It Happened

With 6:54 the game was tied 4-4 until 4:28 when ASU made a three to lead [7-4].
Alcorn State's lead was brief before UAB answered with a quick response.
Smallwood and Moffitt hit a pair of three-pointers to spark a Blazer run [12-7]
UAB closed the quarter on a late 8-0 run and took a 15-10 lead.
Carter drained a three-pointer to push the margin to double digits in the second [24-12].
UAB shot 64 percent in the quarter and outscored the Braves 21-10.
A late free throw by Armstead capped a strong half, sending UAB into the half [36-20].
Smallwood opened the half with a fast-break three to extend the lead [39-20].
The Blazers' defense held Alcorn State to just five points in the quarter.
UAB used a 16-5 advantage to balloon the lead to 52-25 heading into the fourth.
Carter and Smallwood combined for three early three-pointers to put the game out of reach [63-25].
UAB continued to rotate its lineup while maintaining defensive pressure.
The Green and Gold had its biggest lead of the game in the fourth with 2:14 left on the clock [70-26].
The Blazers closed the game with an 18-7 quarter to seal the 70-32 victory.
