UAB Falls 62-59 to West Alabama to Open the Season

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball dropped its season opener, 62-59, to West Alabama on Monday afternoon at Bartow Arena. 
Molly Moffitt, Eleecia Carter and Cali Smallwood led the Blazers with 12 points each, while Moffitt added nine rebounds to the stat sheet. Riley Talbert made her collegiate debut and recorded nine points and four rebounds.
The game was tied two times, but UAB held the led for the entire game until the Tigers made a three with 1.3 seconds remaining to go up 62-59. UAB's last-second attempt was no good at the buzzer.

2025-26 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SEASON TICKETS

Discounted group rates are available for both men's and women's basketball games and pricing is based on the size of the pre-purchased group. This season, UAB Athletics will offer unique fan experiences for groups including a spirit tunnel, sideline warm-up watch, group photo at center court, post-game free throws, and videoboard recognition, among others. Game Notes
- Three players scored in double figures for UAB as Carter, Moffitt and Smallwood all recorded 12 points, respectively.
 - The Blazers were perfect from the free-throw line, making all 19 attempts.
 - The Green and Gold scored 15 points off of 19 West Alabama turnovers.
 - UAB shot 32 percent from the floor (17-for-53), 35 percent from deep (6-for-17) and 100 percent from the line (19-for-19).
 - In comparison, West Alabama shot 38 percent from the field (23-for-60), 36 percent from range (5-for-14) and 55 percent from the free throw line (11-for-20).
 
- UAB opened the contest with a strong defensive showing as the Blazers forced four turnovers in the opening four-plus minutes of action (6-6).
 - The Blazer offense came alive to end the first, posting a 14-1 run over the final 4:26 of the frame, holding a 13-point lead (20-7).
 - West Alabama responded with a run of its own at the start of the second, scoring seven unanswered points (27-14).
 - Both teams picked up the defensive intensity to close the half, as UAB took a 13-point lead to the locker room (34-21).
 - Back-to-back three-pointers for the Blazers kicked off the second half, pushing the UAB lead to 17 points (42-25).
 - Both squads traded baskets through the third quarter media timeout as the Tigers cut the lead to 13 (46-33).
 - West Alabama closed the third quarter on an 8-0 run, shrinking the Blazers' lead to six at the end of the quarter (50-44).
 - The Tigers opened the fourth on another run, scoring six consecutive points to close the margin to one point (55-54).
 - West Alabama took the lead late, knocking down a three-pointer with 1.3 seconds left (62-59).
