UAB Defeats Southern Miss to Open Cancun Challenge

CANCUN, Mexico – UAB women's basketball (3-3) gave Southern Miss (6-1) its first loss of the season with a 77-72 win on Thursday night at the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico.
Eleecia Carter led the Blazers with 21 points and seven rebounds. Molly Moffit recorded a career-high 19 points while adding five rebounds. Monae' Duffy came away with 12 points, while Cali Smallwood also recorded double digit points with 10.
The Golden Eagles also had four players score in double figures with Jakayla Jackson leading the way with 17 points. Southern Miss shot 40 percent from the field and 25 percent from the 3-point range.

- UAB scored 22 points off turnovers and 30 points in the paint.
- Southern Miss started the game by scoring six straight points [6-0].
- The Blazers then used a 16-2 run to the take the lead and close out the first quarter [23-15].
- UAB was able to continue to extend its lead and had its biggest lead of the first half at 18 in the second quarter [42-24].
- The Blazers were able to hold Southern Miss to shooting 23 percent from the field and 12 percent in the 3-point range in the second.
- Going into halftime, the Blazers had a 16-point lead [44-28].
- USM called an early timeout with 8:03 left on the clock after UAB began the first half with six points [50-32]
- The Green and Gold had its biggest lead of the game at 20 in the third. [52-32].
- Southern Miss went on a 12-2 run to get within 10 points of the Blazers [54-44].
- At the end of the third, UAB was leading by 11 [57-46].
- The Blazers began the fourth quarter scoring six straight to lead by 18 [64-46].
- With 1:55 remaining the Golden Eagles went on a 9-0 run to get within four points [68-64].
- Moffitt made a three to put UAB up by seven [71-64].
- Southern Miss was able to get within three (75-72) with two seconds remaining, but it wasn't enough after Smallwood made her two free throws [77-72].
