SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Tulsa
Tulsa has been the shock of the season so far, with back-to-back wins over Wichita State and an away victory at UTSA. The Golden Hurricane nearly shocked the preseason favorites Rice in Houston when they took a 2-0 lead before Rice completed the reverse sweep.
The Golden Hurricanes received four American honors for last week's play, with Brayden Hipp winning Setter of the Week and Maegan Mills winning Freshman of the Week. Kat Cooper and Olivia Vance each earned honorable mentions from the conference following a 2-0 week against the Shockers.
Tulsa's offense is led by Junior Outside Hitter Vance, averaging 2.93 kills per set on a .259 hitting percentage. The Golden Hurricane offense runs through reigning American Setter of the Week, Hipp, averaging 9.40 assists/set.
Tulsa ranks in the top-25 nationally in kills per set (15th, 14.14), assists (12th, 13.22), and digs per set (21st, 16.47).
Middle Blocker Jill Hanson leads all qualified American players in hitting percentage at .394.
Wichita State
Wichita State has only played three matches since it opened up the American slate at UAB on Sept. 26, losing two of the three games. The Shockers wrapped up their road trip with a 3-0 win at Memphis before losing both ends of a home-and-home with Tulsa.
The Shockers' big win was a 3-2 victory against RV Arkansas during opening weekend. Wichita State defeated each of its common opponents with UAB. The Shockers defeated Tennessee Tech and Samford in dominant fashion.
Redshirt-Junior middle blocker Maddie Wilson leads the American in total blocks with 82.0 and blocks per set, 1.44. Wilson ranks 14th in the country with her 82 total blocks and is 20th in DI in blocks per set.
SERIES HISTORY
Tulsa
UAB seeks to snap a 12-match losing streak to the Golden Hurricanes, with the Blazers' last victory coming in 2008. Tulsa leads the all-time series, 15-3, and has won eight of nine matches in Tulsa. UAB's lone victory in Tulsa was in 2007 when UAB swept the Golden Hurricanes.
The Blazers have been swept in their last three matches in Tulsa and have won just one set in their last 22 sets in Tulsa.
Wichita State
The Blazers visit the Shockers just two weeks after falling to them at Bartow Arena. The teams' matchup on September 26 was just the fourth time the programs have met, with the first match being when UAB transitioned to the American in 2023. UAB is 0-2 in Wichita, winning just one set in the two matches at Charles Koch Arena.
A LOOK AROUND THE AMERICAN
Just one team remains perfect through two weeks of American play: the 2024 regular season champions, South Florida. The Bulls have won all four of their matches 3-1, defeating early-season surprises, Temple and North Texas, last week. USF topped the American in the opening RPI ranking of the season, ranked 36th, seven spots ahead of Tulsa.
