Volleyball Falls to UTSA at Bartow Arena

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB Volleyball fell to 0-4 in American Conference play with a 3-1 loss to UTSA, Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After UAB took the opening set 25–19, the Roadrunners responded with three straight (26–24, 25–23, 25–17) to seal the match.
Two kills by Crook opened up a 5-3 lead for the Blazers in set one. UTSA got ahead by three points at 12-9, but then UAB won eight straight points. UAB won the first set behind six Jorda Crook kills.
UTSA ran away with the second set leading 10-6 after a kill by Brooke Elliot. Six roadrunners had kills in the second set, leading UTSA to a 26-24 win. Set three started off very similar with the Roadrunners got out to a 6-2 lead. UTSA went on a 5-1 run to lead 19-15, before the Blazers got to within one at 24-23 with a Mia Reese kill.
The away team was leading 2-1 headed into set four. UAB led by as many as six points at 16-10, but UTSA came storming back. A 10-3 run made it 19-20 UTSA leading late in the fourth. Taylor Gaines got two out of the last three points to win the match for UTSA.
UTSA's offense clicked at key moments, finishing with a .196 hitting percentage while out-blocking UAB 9–13.
Taylor Gaines paced UTSA with 14 kills, while Gigi Mason tallied 15 and Ally Tribe added 12. Setter Megan Hawkins orchestrated the attack with 52 assists and added 11 digs for a double-double. Libero Giada Obregon led all players with 20 digs to anchor the Roadrunner defense.
UAB was led by Jorda Crook, who finished with 21 kills, while Mia Reese posted a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Abby Jones also chipped in 14 kills on .345 hitting, but the Blazers couldn't overcome UTSA's momentum after the first set.
UAB drops to 7-9, (0-4 American) and UTSA moves to 10-5, (3-1 American).
UP NEXT
UAB heads out west for two conference games against Tulsa (Oct. 10) and Wichita State (Oct. 12).
