Blazers Fall to Owls in Sweep

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB Volleyball falls to 0-3 in American Conference play after a 3-0 loss to Rice. The Owls dominated on both sides of the net, hitting .261 while holding UAB to a .067 hitting percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rice dominated from the jump, taking a 9-2 lead, forcing an early UAB timeout. Stringing together a pair of runs, the Owls extended the lead to 16-5. The Blazers used a six-point run to close Rice's lead. However, six-straight Rice points ended the set 25-14 in favor of Rice. The Owls forced UAB to hit negative in the opening frame, registering eight attack errors with seven kills.
The Blazers held tight to Rice in the second set, never falling more than two points behind until a four-point Rice run gave the Owls a 21-18 lead, forcing Betsy Freeburg to use a timeout. Despite holding up to a three-point lead in the set, UAB lost its grip on the lead, eventually falling 25-21 after a 4-1 Rice run to end the set.
Once again, the Blazers held on with the Owls deep into the set, trailing by just a point before a three-point Rice run gave the Owls a 14-10 lead. With a 17-15 lead, Rice won eight of the last 10 points to cap off the sweep victory.
STANDOUTS
Addyson Smock recorded six total blocks, tied for her career-high and joining Summer Snead for the most blocks in a three-set match this season.
Jorda Crook led the Blazers in kills for the 10th time this season, finishing with 10 kills against Rice.
Delaney Bowser was the only Blazer to hit double-digit digs with 12.
