BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's soccer (6-5-6, 3-3-3) earned a win in a thrilling fashion Sunday afternoon, edging South Florida (7-8-2, 3-4-2) 3-2 at PNC Field behind a last-minute winner from Sydney Bolinger.
South Florida struck first just six minutes in when Sadie Sider-Echenberg converted a penalty kick to give the Bulls an early advantage. The Blazers responded quickly when Avery Berryman netted the equalizer in the 11th minute off an assist from Lauren Lucero, tying the match 1-1 heading into halftime.
UAB controlled possession throughout, outshooting the Bulls 24-10 and holding a 57% possession edge. The pressure paid off in the second half when Lailah Stewart put UAB ahead 2-1 in the 66th minute, again set up by Lucero for her second assist of the day.
South Florida refused to fold, equalizing in the 86th minute through Selma Astrom, assisted by Linnea Nestor, to make it 2-2. But UAB's persistence was rewarded in the dying moments when Bolinger delivered the decisive goal in the 90thminute, her first of the season, off a setup from Abbey Burns.
Goalkeeper Leah Parsons earned the win with two saves, while South Florida's Leire Herraez Gallach made 12 stops to keep the Bulls close.
Up next, the Blazers travel North Texas on Thursday, October 30 to close out the regular season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT.
