BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's soccer team fell 5-0 to Charlotte on Sunday night at PNC Field, as the visiting 49ers used a dominant second half to pull away.
Charlotte (6-3-2, 3-0-1 American) struck early when Denis Krioutchenkov scored in the fifth minute off a setup from Samuel Manufor. The Blazers (3-7-1, 1-4-0 American) created several chances in response, including first-half shots on goal from Gustavo Barbosa, Mathias Love Groth and Patrik Fagan, but Charlotte goalkeeper Leo Stritter stopped all three to maintain the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The 49ers broke the game open after halftime. Defender Andreas Evangelou doubled the lead in the 50th minute on a cross from Jemone Barclay, then added his second of the night just six minutes later off an assist from Grant Stewart to make it 3-0. Elias Arsvoll and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou added late goals in the 82nd and 89th minutes, respectively, to cap the scoring.
Stritter finished with four saves in the shutout, while UAB keeper Tom Mabon recorded three stops. The Blazers were outshot 14-8 overall and 8-4 in shots on target.
UAB will return to action next week for its final non-conference game of the season at North Carolina on Wednesday.
