Blazers Fall 82-70 to Wichita State

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (9-6, 0-3) fell 82-70 to Wichita State (7-9, 1-2) at Bartow Arena on Saturday night.
Maddie Walsh led the Blazers with 19 points, while Sara Bershers recorded a season-high 16 points. Journey Armstead registered 15 points and added five rebounds and five assists. Molly Moffitt led UAB in the rebound category with a career-high 13 rebounds.
The Shockers were the first on the board, but the Blazers tied the game and then grabbed the lead, 5-2. At the 5:50 mark UAB went on a 13-2 run and lead 20-9 with 3:34 left. No one would score until Wichita State made a free throw (20-10) at the 1:55 mark. Walsh made a layup to extend the Blazers lead to 22-10, but Shocker, Jordan Jackson, made a three to make it 22-13 at the end of the first.
In the second, UAB would continue to extend its lead and would lead as many as 10. Wichita State started to cut into the Blazers lead late in the frame with a 10-2 run and only be down by two (38-36) with 47 seconds left. Shocker Taylor Jameson received a technical and Walsh made both free throws to make the score 40-36 going into halftime.
Wichita State opened the third with a layup and then tied the score 40-40 with 9:14 left and the score would be tied four more times. There were also four different lead changes in the quarter. The tied scores and lead changes lasted until there was 2:38 on the clock when WSU grabbed the lead at 55-54. The Shockers led for the rest of the frame and led 63-56 heading into the last 10 minutes.
Each team went back and forth but Wichita State shot 50 percent in the fourth quarter to maintain its lead. WSU started to make their lead larger with 2:44 left to earn the victory.

UAB is back in Bartow to host Memphis on Wednesday, January 8. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT and will air live on ESPN+.
