Armstead, Walsh Led the Blazers to 73-56 Win Over Memphis

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team (10-6, 1-3 AAC) earned its first conference win of the season in a 73-56 victory over Memphis (3-11, 1-2 AAC) on Wednesday night at Bartow Arena.
Journey Armstead and Maddie Walsh led the Blazers with 20 points apiece against the Tigers. Armstead added six assists and five rebounds to the stat sheet. Rayne Tucker registered 12 points and six rebounds, while Molly Moffitt tallied 11 points.
UAB shot 52 percent for the game while Memphis shot 42 percent. The Blazers scored 42 points in the paint, 28 points off turnovers and 22 points off fast breaks.
The Tigers began the first quarter in the lead until UAB used an 13-4 run to take the lead back at 19-13 at the 3:18 mark. Memphis then went on a 9-0 run to take back the lead at the end of the frame, 22-19.
To begin the second, Armstead made a fast break off a turnover to make the score 22-21 and start a 13-0 run, then Moffitt gave the Blazers the lead at 23-22 with a layup. The Green and Gold keep the lead for the rest of the game and led as many as 11 in the quarter. UAB's defense only allowed Memphis to score nine points, while the Blazers offense scored 19 points. UAB shot 61 percent in the second to have a 38-31 lead going into halftime.
The Green and Gold opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run to lead as many as 14 at 47-33. The Blazers closed out the quarter with an 8-0 run to have an 18-point lead at 59-41 heading into the fourth quarter. Armstead and Walsh both scored seven of their 20 points in the third.
In the fourth quarter, UAB continued its momentum and had the biggest lead of the game at 19 to earn the 73-56 win.

The Blazers travel to Boca Raton to face Florida Atlantic on Saturday, January 11. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. CT and will air live on ESPN+.
