UAB WBB Gets Road Win Over Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – UAB women's basketball (11-6, 2-3 AAC) earned a 73-61 win on the road at Florida Atlantic (9-8, 1-3 AAC). The Blazers had five player score in double figures, while Jade Weathersby recorded a double-double.
Journey Armstead led UAB with 14 points and collected seven rebounds and four assists. Maddie Walsh registered 13 points, while Weathersby earned her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Tracey Bershers tallied 12 points and added six assists and five rebounds to the stat sheet. Eleecia Carter came away with 11 points on the afternoon.
Florida Atlantic was the first to score, but UAB was able to get the lead back at 4-3. The Blazers would maintain the lead the rest of the game other than FAU tying the game twice in the first. Weathersby made a 3-pointer with five seconds left in the quarter to give UAB a 21-14 lead after the first.
In the second, the Green and Gold continued to extend their lead and led as many as 14. At the 4:03 mark, the Blazers went a 10-2 run to have that 14-point lead at 39-25 with 2:04 left to play. Carter made a three with six seconds left to make the score 42-30 going into halftime. Carter led UAB in the second with eight points, while six points in the quarter came from Bershers. For the first half, the Blazers shot 46 percent and held the Owls to 35 percent.
Early in the third, Florida Atlantic went on a 9-0 run to get within one of UAB at 44-43. Weathersby made a 3-pointer to stop the run and start an 8-0 run for the Green and Gold to make the score 52-43 at the 3:09 mark. The Blazers continued to score the rest of the frame and had a nine-point lead at 60-51 going into the final 10 minutes.
Genevive Wedemeyer opened the fourth with a three, but the Owls went on a 9-2 run to make the score 65-60 with 4:55 left to play. Florida Atlantic would only score one more point the rest of the frame off a free throw. UAB's offense shot 40 percent for the quarter while the Blazers defense held FAU to only shooting 25 percent.
The Blazers shot 43 percent while the Owls shot 35 percent for the contest. The Green and Gold scored 42 bench points, 28 points in the paint and 14 points off turnovers.
