Women’s Basketball Wins Nailbiter at South Florida, 62-61

TAMPA, Fla. – UAB women's basketball (12-6, 3-3 AAC) snapped South Florida's (11-8, 4-2 AAC) seven game home winning streak with a 62-61 victory in Yuengling Center on Tuesday night.
The win marks the first victory against USF since 2003 when the Green and Gold beat the Bulls 62-58 on February 1 in Tampa.
Journey Armstead and Eleecia Carter combined for 32 points with each recording 16 points, with Carter's 16 points being a season-high. Carter was 6-of-7 in the field goal range and 4-of-5 from behind the arc and Armstead went 4-of-8 from the field and 8-of-8 at the free throw line. Carter added five assists and four rebounds while Armstead tallied four rebounds. Jade Weathersby registered her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds on 5-of-8 shooting in the field and 4-of-5 behind the free throw line.
For the first four minutes of the first quarter the game was back and forth with the score being tied three times. At the 6:27 mark Armstead made a layup and drew a foul and headed to free throw line. Armstead made the free throw to tie the score 7-7, but South Florida went on a 10-0 run to have a 17-7 lead. UAB was able to get with seven at 19-12 to end the first.
In the second quarter no one scored until the 7:20 mark when Weathersby made a layup to make the score 19-14. The quarter went back and forth and UAB kept closing in on the Bulls lead until Carter hit a three to give UAB the lead at 30-29 with 32 seconds left. Genevive Wedemeyer fouled the Bulls with two seconds left and Ines Piper made both her free throws to give USF a 31-30 lead at halftime.
The Blazers offense shot 58 percent in the second while UAB's defense held the Bulls to 17 percent.
Both teams battled to begin the third with the Green and Gold tying the score twice, then taking the lead at 38-37 with 7:28 left. South Florida took back the lead (41-40) at the 4:32 mark, but the Blazers took the lead one last time for the quarter with a 10-0 run and was able to extend their lead to 50-45 to close out the third.
UAB was able to maintain its lead for the majority of the fourth until USF's Romi Levy tied the game 59-59 at the 1:47 mark with a free throw after earning an and one. Weathersby was then fouled and made one of her free throws to give the Blazers back the lead (60-59). South Florida's Piper made a layup to grab the lead back at 61-60 with 46 seconds left. The Bulls missed a jump shot with 14 seconds left and Weathersby got the rebound before UAB called a timeout with 12 seconds on the clock.
Maddie Walsh inbounded the ball to Carter before she passed the ball to Weathersby who drove in for a layup and gave UAB the lead with six seconds left. The Bulls had one last chance, but the 3-point attempt was no good as the clock ran out and the Green and Gold earned the 62-61 win.
The Blazers shot 42 percent and held South Florida to 32 percent for the game. UAB scored 30 points in the paint and had 20 bench points on the night.
