Women’s Basketball Falls to UTSA

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball (12-7, 3-4 AAC) fell to UTSA (16-2, 7-0 AAC) on Saturday at Bartow Arena, 73-63. Jade Weathersby scored 15 points while Sara Bershers registered 10 points.
UTSA scored six straight points to begin the game before a timeout was called. Coming out of the timeout, Molly Moffitt made a three to cut UTSA's lead in half. At the 4:31 mark, S. Bershers tied the game at 6-6 with a 3-pointer. The Blazers would have the lead twice the rest of the quarter at 9-8 and 11-10, but the Roadrunners closed out the frame leading by four, 15-11.
To begin the second, UTSA grabbed the first four points before Tracey Bershers made a three to cut into the Roadrunners lead at 19-14. With 6:37 left, UTSA had its biggest lead of the quarter at 11 (25-14). The rest of the frame, the Roadrunners would maintain their lead and shot 50 percent to have a 35-26 lead going into halftime.
UTSA began the third on a 7-0 run to extend its lead 42-26 with 7:50 left to play. At the 3:55 mark the Roadrunners began a 10-0 run to have their biggest lead of the game at 23 (54-31). T. Bershers stopped the run with a three before S. Bershers also made a 3-pointer with 47 seconds left. UTSA made layup with 26 seconds on the clock to lead 56-37. Maddie Walsh hit a three with two seconds left to make the score 56-40 going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, UAB's offense shot 57 percent to cut into the Roadrunners lead, while the Blazers defense held UTSA to shooting 28 percent. Eleecia Carter made a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to get within eight at 71-63, but the Roadrunners made both free throws after being fouled to win by 10 points.
Weathersby scored eight points in the fourth to help break into UTSA's lead, while Carter tallied six points and Genevive Wedemeyer recorded five points.
The Blazers shot 40 percent for the game and the Roadrunners shot 43 percent. UAB scored 24 points in the paint, 22 bench points and 12 points off turnovers.
