Women’s Basketball Wins 76-73 at Wichita State in Overtime

WICHITA, Kan. – UAB women's basketball (14-7, 5-4 AAC) earned a 76-73 overtime victory at Wichita State (7-14, 1-7 AAC) on Saturday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.
Sara Bershers led the Blazers with a season-high 19 points, shooting 7-of-9 in field goal range and 5-of-6 at the 3-point range. Journey Armstead recorded 17 points, nine assists and six rebounds. Jade Weathersby registered her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Tracey Bershers tallied 10 points and five rebounds.
The Shockers had a 4-0 lead with 8:02 left in the first, but points from Weathersby and Molly Moffitt allowed UAB to only be down by one (6-5). At the 3:15 mark, the Blazers began a 7-0 run to take the lead and be up 12-10 with 1:45 left. Wichita State was able to tie the game 12-12 before Weatherby make a fast break off a turnover to give UAB a 14-12 advantage. With 26 seconds remaining, WSU tied the score and ended the frame with the game tied 14-14.
The Blazers began the second quarter on a 9-0 run to have a nine-point lead at 23-14. The Green and Gold were able to hold on and maintain their lead and went into halftime leading 33-27. Weathersby scored eight of her 16 points in the second, while T. Bershers had four points, Walsh and S. Bershers each had three and Moffitt had one point to contribute to UAB's 19 points in the frame. The Blazers shot 50 percent in the second and held the Shockers to shooting 28 percent.
Walsh got the scoring started with a layup followed by a three from T. Bershers to begin the third. UAB had an 11-point advantage (38-27) at the 8:59 mark, but Wichita State went on a 14-1 run to get back in the lead at 41-39. The rest of the quarter both teams went back and forth scoring and the game was tied 49-49 with 36 seconds left. T. Bershers hit a three with seven seconds left to give the Blazers a 52-49 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Wichita State was able to score first in the fourth before the Green and Gold went on a 10-0 run to lead 62-51 with 4:49 left. The Shockers then answered back with a 11-0 run to tie the game 62-62 at the 1:37 mark. Each team had chances to score but neither team was able to capitalize, and the game headed into overtime.
In overtime, the Blazers took an early lead with two made free throws from Armstead. UAB led as many as six at the 3:45 mark, but Wichita State was able to cut the six-point lead in half with a 3-pointer. With 1:17 left, the Blazers led 73-71 and WSU had several chances to score but were not able to. Armstead drew a foul and made both free throws to make the score 75-71 and was then fouled again and made one of her free throws (76-71). Shocker, Jayla Murray, made a layup at the buzzer to make the final score 76-73.
This is the second consecutive game UAB has gone into overtime. The Green and Gold earned a 63-56 win against Rice on Wednesday at Bartow Arena.
