UAB Falls at UTSA, 67-56

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – UAB women's basketball (9-5, 0-2 AAC) fell on the road at UTSA (11-2, 2-0 AAC) 67-56 on Wednesday night.
Rayne Tucker led the Blazers with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and added six rebounds. Journey Armstead also scored in double figures with 13 points.
UTSA begin the game on a 9-0 run before Armstead gave UAB its first points with 5:43 on the clock. The Roadrunners continued to extend their lead and end the first leading 20-9. Armstead scored seven of her 13 points in the first.
The Green and Gold started the second quarter on a 12-3 run to get within two of UTSA (23-21), with the help of Tucker, who scored eight points during the run. The rest of the frame the Blazers were able to keep it close and head into halftime trailing by seven, 32-25.
The first seven minutes of the third the contest went back and forth with the Roadrunners still maintaining the lead, but the Blazers used a 10-2 run to get with two at the end of the third. At the 3:14 mark, UAB began its run to close in on UTSA with Roadrunner Cheyenne Rowe making a jump shot with 41 seconds left to put UTSA up by four. Jade Weathersby answered back with a second chance jump shot at the buzzer to make the score 48-46 heading into the final frame.
With 8:10 on the clock in the fourth, Maddie Walsh made a layup to tie the score 50-50 and drew a foul for an and one. Walsh made the free throw to give the Blazers their first lead of the game (51-50). The Roadrunners grabbed the lead back and the Green and Gold would lead one more time (54-53) at the 6:41 mark. In the last six minutes of the frame, UAB committed five turnovers, and UTSA went on a 14-2 run to earn the 67-56 win.
UAB shot 42 percent for the game, while the Roadrunners shot 45 percent. The Green and Gold scored 32 points in the paint and 17 points off turnovers.

The Blazers are back in Bartow Arena to host Wichita State on Saturday, January 4. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. CT and will air live on ESPN+.
