Burns Leads UAB Women’s Soccer Past Ole Miss 1-0

BIRMINGHAM – Abbey Burns' goal in the 57th minute was all the scoring UAB needed in its 1-0 victory over Ole Miss on Thursday night.
"One of the biggest wins in program history," head coach Lisa Mann said. "To take on a team like that, I thought the team was brilliant. We were so brave with the ball and defensively we were solid. We took our opportunity when we got it. I am really happy with the teams performance."
With the victory, the Blazers improve to 2-2-1 on the season, while Ole Miss moves to 3-3-0. The victory marks the fifth time the Blazer defeated the Rebels. The last win against Ole Miss was in 2011 by a score of 4-2.
The game-winner was set up for a penalty kick, taken by Burns. It is the fourth goal of the season for Burns' and she leads the team in goals.
"We moved Abbey [Burns] out of the back line to midfield, but it wasn't for goal scoring," Mann said. "It was for her ability to keep the ball. She is a leader now, one of our team captains and she has stepped up to take penalty's. That has been a big part of it. She is huge for us, as was every player for us today. The win was a team effort."
The Blazers defense held the Rebels to seven shots, while Ole Miss had 11 fouls on the night.
The Blazers hit the road to conclude non-conference play at Southern Miss. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT and will air on ESPN+.
