Alabama Showdown Ends with Loss to Samford

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB Volleyball team dropped all three games this weekend to South Alabama, Auburn, and Samford. The Blazers won only two sets the whole tournament, as both South Alabama and Samford beat UAB 3-1, while Auburn swept the Green and Gold.

UAB started off strong taking a 4-2 lead before dropping the first set against the Jaguars. The lead slipped away after four points in a row by South Alabama to make the score 21-16. The Blazers hit .345, which helped them with the second set 25-18. Once again a late streak by Samford gave them the third and fourth sets.

In the second game of the Alabama Showdown, UAB faced off against their second SEC opponent of the season in Auburn. The first SEC opponent was Mississippi State back in August. Freshman Abby Jones led UAB with eight kills and just two errors (.400). The first set was tight as UAB once led 21-20 before the Tigers won the last three points. Auburn dominated sets two and three winning 25-16 and 25-17.
Final score: UAB 0, Auburn 3

The Magic City Matchup ended in a win for the Bulldogs. Samford dominated from the start, winning 88 total points. The Blazers were led by setter Kelsey Smith in multiple categories. She finished with 10 kills, 18 assists, and two blocks. Sophomore Summer Snead made her first start of the season and of her career today. Samford's Ally Cordes led all players with 13 Kills and two blocks. Samford started the game on a 4-0 run, forcing UAB into a timeout. Set two had a similar start with a five point lead for Samford after six. UAB hit .079 and -.091 in sets one and two. The Blazers did turn it around in set three hitting .625 and only allowing 13 Bulldog points.

UAB will start conference play in Birmingham, AL against Tulsa Friday at 7 p.m.
