Volleyball Wins One on the Weekend

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB volleyball team went 1-1 on the weekend with a 3-0 win over Alcorn State.
On Friday, the Blazers battled against the team out of Lorman, Mississippi to a straight set win. The first set started quickly with both teams tied at four before UAB won nine of the next 11 points to lead 15-7. A huge swing by Mia Reese ended set one with a score of 25-10.
UAB won set two behind a host of Blazer kills. Katia Nikolic got her first ace of the season to start the Blazer scoring in the second set. Junior Kelsey Smith, served seven times in a row to give UAB a 22-10 lead. Freshman Abby Jones, added three kills herself during set two.
The final set was also won by UAB, allowing only nine points to the Braves. 14 straight points by Chloe Rodriguez and Meg Jarrett all but sealed it for UAB. Jarrett added three Aces during that cluster of points.
On Saturday, UAB grabbed the second set against Mississippi State, as the Bulldogs win 3-1. UAB was led by opposite hitter Jorda Crook with a career high of 24 kills. The first set was a close one finishing 25-22 Mississippi State. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-4 lead on the back of two Karli Schmidt kills. A kill by Jorda Crook gave the Blazers a 20-18 lead before Mississippi State closed out set one.
Mississippi State was hot in the second set jumping out to a 21-10 lead. The Blazers won six out of the next seven points to make the score 22-16. Set two finished 25-18.
UAB showed their resilience by winning set three after being down 2-0. Five different Blazers recorded kills including nine by Jorda Crook. 11 ties and four lead changes saw UAB win set four 25-22.
A four point streak gave UAB a 5-4 lead after Asli Celikkol got a kill from Kelsey Smith. The Blazers also led 13-12 before Mississippi State won four out of the next five. Ultimately, the Bulldogs pulled this one out winning three of the four sets.
UAB is back in action next weekend as the team travels up Interstate 65 to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the Bellarmine Classic.
