As fall camp continues to unfold, here are some storylines that have developed throughout the first two weeks.
- The running back room had tremendous depth entering fall camp, but the emergence of freshman Solomon Beebe has only added to that. His older brother, Lee, was named to the Doak Walker Watch List earlier this month, and the backfield also includes Isaiah Jacobs who looks healthy coming off a torn ACL at Tulane last year, LSU transfer and Birmingham native Armoni Goodwin, and veteran Lee Witherspoon. However, Solomon Beebe has continued to bust big runs during camp and looks as if he could contribute right away.
- Sophomore receiver Amare Thomas, looking to build off his 2023 breakout freshman season, has shown he's ready for the WR1 role this year, making big plays routinely including a couple highlight reel-worthy one-handed catches. Additionally, the wideouts as a unit have had a great camp as Kam Shanks, Corri Milliner, Brandon Hawkins Jr., Iverson Hooks, Brandon Buckhaulter and Malachi Holt-Bennett look to fill the void left by Arizona Cardinal draft pick Tejhaun Palmer.
- The defense looks to take a step this season and along with adding age and experience through the transfer portal, it looks as if playing 10 true freshmen on defense last season as paid off. Sophomore safety Chris Bracy has been making big plays all throughout camp, while Ricky Lee III is poised for a breakout year at corner. Up front, sophomores Emmanuel Waller, Miquon Merriweather and redshirt freshman Eamon Smalls have been featured in the rotation that includes sixth-year senior Kevin Penn and P4 transfers LD Cox, DeMarcus Smith and Derrick Shepard Jr.
- The Blazers took to Protective Stadium for a padded scrimmage last Saturday, where Coach Dilfer said the team's overall physicality and depth stood out to him, especially on the offensive and defensive lines.
- Davey O'Brien Watch List honoree Jacob Zeno enters year two in Dilfer's system and looks poised to set more records as a redshirt senior. He has full command of the offense and is ready to cement himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation this season.
