CLEARWATER - The UAB baseball team (26-28, 13-14 AAC) hit the ball nine times, but dropped the first game of the AAC tournament against Wichita State (29-27, AAC 15-12).
A couple of huge plays started the game for both teams. A 543 double play got UAB out of a 1st and 3rd jam in the first inning. Dayvin Johnson then made a huge catch in center field to keep Tyler Harrington from getting an extra base hit.
A tough 2nd inning for the Blazers, as UAB allowed three runs. A fielder's choice, walk, and hit by pitch allowed those runs to come across. The Shockers were out-hitting UAB 6-2 after four innings, which helped them score again in the 4th. This time Wichita State scored a run on another fielder's choice.
UAB tried to answer in the 5th inning when Gavin Lewis Jr. fisted a ball over the 3rd baseman's head. That gave UAB runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs. Wichita State was able to get out of the jam with a ground ball to 1st base. Colin Daniel was pitching well with seven strikeouts through five innings. Wichita State did leave seven on base through five innings. On the other hand, UAB struggled getting anything going leaving just five on base.
UAB started the 7th inning with back to back singles by Tyler Harrington and Peyton Puckett. Jack Mount then took the mound to take over for Caden Favors who gave up zero runs. The bases were then loaded after Darryl Buggs was hit by a pitch. Harrington did score in the 7th because of an RBI fielder's choice by Logan Braunschweig. The Shockers led 4-1 after the top of the 7th. Wichita State exploded for two runs on two big swings in the bottom of the inning. Josh Livingston and Seth Stroh hit two, two run shots to right field. The Shockers took a seven run lead into the 8th.
The Blazers left two on again in the 8th inning, using a couple of pinch hits in Jake Smallwood and Austin Young. They both stayed in at 1st and 2nd base. Thomas Ballard came in for the 8th inning and retired two of the three batters. UAB scored their 3rd error of the game to put Jordan Rodgers on 1st base.
Nick Hollifield drove in Logan Braunschweig to try and rally in the 9th inning, but Wichita State would end it on a strikeout. Final score UAB 2, Wichita State 8.
