Dereje Qualifies for NCAA East Region Prelims

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Track and Field continues its momentum in postseason competition, with Jasmine Dereje qualifying for the 400m Hurdles in the NCAA East Region Preliminaries, hosted by the University of Kentucky. Dereje, who placed second in the event at the AAC Championships, will make her first-ever appearance in her first collegiate season.
"We are extremely proud of Jasmine. She ran two phenomenal races at the conference championships to earn a spot as an NCAA qualifier in the 400m hurdles." said head coach Kurt Thomas.
Dereje qualified for the 400m Hurdles in the preliminary rounds in the AAC Championships, setting a PR time of 1:00.46 before setting another personal best in the final, granting her silver and qualifying her for East Regional Preliminaries with a 58.96.
"This is a great racing and learning experience for her next week. We will go out there, race as hard as we can, and see what happens. These opportunities are never guaranteed from year to year, and hopefully, we can take advantage of this one this year." said Thomas.
The NCAA East Region will take place from Wednesday, May 22 to Saturday, May 25. Dereje will compete in the 400m Hurdles on Thursday, May 23 at 7:25 p.m. CST/8:25 p.m. EST.
