Blazers Deliver Second Consecutive Walk-off To Clinch Series

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball secured the second win of the series over Memphis with a second consecutive walk-off of the weekend. Right fielder Hannah Miles sent an RBI single, plating Kaily Collett and giving the Blazers the 2-1 victory.

The Blazers tallied three hits, including a sac hit, and over 20 at-bats. The Green and Gold improved to 19-22 and 10-7 on the season.

IN THE INNINGS
The Blazers and Tigers kept the score within close quarters throughout the first few innings. The Tigers were first to strike and reach base with two fielder's choices and a single to place two on base. However, UAB stopped the rally with a snag into the glove of Olivia Valbak.

The Blazers were fruitless in the bottom of the first but were able to prevent Memphis from collecting runs in the bottom of the second. With the bottom of the second arriving for the Blazers, a series of hits came to fruition for UAB. A walk from Ant Henderson, followed by back-to-back singles from Makenzie Droddy loaded the bases. Lilly Crowe approached the plate, sending a flyball out to center field and plating Henderson.

UAB now leads 1-0, delivering 1-2-3 innings through the third and fourth before entering the bottom of the fourth inning. The Blazers were able to gain one runner on base but were unable to score after a groundout. Memphis finally responded on offense, tying the game with a solo homer to center field in the fifth. Another hit came from the Tigers but the Blazers halted the rally to enter the final two innings.

The Green and Gold did not collect runs in the fifth but maintained defensive efforts with another 1-2-3 inning. UAB went scoreless once again before coming into the seventh with the score tied at one run apiece.

With the score at 1-1, the Tigers looked to add a final run, drawing two early outs before singling to right field. Hannah Dorsett would halt the momentum, grabbing a slow grounder and bringing UAB to the offensive. A walk from Alyssa Aguilar, followed by a pinch runner substitution with Collett put UAB in position to score. Collet went on to steal second base before Bella Wiggins pinch-hit for Lilly Crowe, drawing a walk.

The game-deciding run came from Hannah Miles, who delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Kaily Collett and giving the Blazers the walk-off victory.

IN THE BOX

UAB totaled three hits, drew five walks, and tallied 21 at-bats.
Aguilar, Droddy, and Miles were the three batters from the Green and Gold with hits. Miles and Crowe finished with an RBI apiece.
Caitlin Russell finished the afternoon pitching a complete game. She faced 28 batters and now has a record of 6-3.
