MBB Hosts SMU in Crucial Senior Day Matchup

BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball will host SMU on Sunday in its regular season finale for Senior Day. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Bartow Arena. The winner of Sunday's game will capture the 4-seed in the AAC Tournament, earning a double-bye.
UAB will recognize three seniors prior to the game in Javian Davis, Jon Coleman and Seth Sigmon.
SERIES HISTORY
The Blazers lead the all-time series 9-3 but fell in the teams' first meeting this sesaon. UAB led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but could not hold off the Mustangs' late rally, falling 72-69.
LAST TIME OUT
UAB put together its most dominant performance of the season on Thursday night in Philadelphia. The Blazers downed Temple, 100-72, as four different players scored at least 17 points. Christian Coleman had his best game as a Blazers with a career high 19 points and seven rebounds while Eric Gaines and Yaxel Lendeborg each posted double-doubles.
STEPPING UP
Highlight-reel plays marked Eric Gaines' first season in Birmingham with two SportsCenter Top Ten appearances and numerous high-flying dunks. After averaging 11.5 points and 4.3 assists per game, Gaines has played an even larger role this year as the only returning player to average double-digit points per game last season. Gaines has upped his scoring numbers while maintaining his defensive prowess this season for UAB, averaging 11.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game. He scored 17 points and dished out 10 assists in a win over Temple, his third 10-assist outing of the year. Gaines is tied for No. 32 in the nation with 5.3 assists per game.
VETERAN PRESENCE
Javian Davis enters his final year of eligibility in 2023-24 and is primed to play a big role on this year's UAB team. Davis averaged 6.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last season while splitting time with Trey Jemison. Davis opened the 2023-24 season with a career performance against Bradley, scoring 20 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and securing four steals while shooting 8-for-9 from the field. Davis has set a career high in points twice this season against Middle Tennessee with 21 and Montevallo with 22.
CRASH THE BOARDS
The Blazers finished the 2022-23 season at No. 2 in the NCAA in rebounds per game at 40.9 and No. 5 in offensive rebounds per game at 13.5 and are once again a top-100 rebounding team. UAB is 62nd nationally, grabbing 38.0 rebounds per game. The Blazers excel on the offensive glass, grabbing 12.9 offensive boards per game, which ranks 25th in the nation. Yaxel Lendeborg leads the Blazers in rebounding, grabbing 10.2 per game. He has grabbed 15 or more rebounds in eight games this season, including a 21-rebound game vs. Florida Atlantic which ranks second in program history.
