UAB Women’s Basketball Falls at Memphis, 82-61

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UAB women's basketball team suffered an 82-61 loss at Memphis on Saturday afternoon in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The Blazers (18-11, 9-8 AAC) shot 37 percent for the game, but Memphis (13-15, 9-8 AAC) was 43 percent from the floor.
Denim DeShields led four Blazers in doubles figures with 17 points and connected on six of her 17 shots, while also registering seven assists. Jade Weathersby followed DeShields with 16 points of her own, with Maddie Walsh recorded 15 points. Walsh went 6-of-10 in field goal range and 3-of-7 from the long range. Mia Moore more also scored in double figures with 11 points and led UAB with nine rebounds.
Walsh had another career milestone with her second three of the game and has now made 100 career threes.
The Tigers got an early lead and were 7-0 with 8:13 still left in the first quarter. The Blazers shot 46 percent and Memphis shot 48 percent from the floor, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers had a 24-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
UAB was able to cut the Tigers lead to three four times in the second frame with the help of Weathersby, DeShields and Walsh. The Blazers couldn't stop Memphis' red-hot shooting and went into halftime down 44-31.
In the third quarter the Tigers outscored the Blazers 21-11 and heading into the final frame leading 65-42.
The gap was too big for UAB to close in the fourth and the Blazers would only get within 21 in the final quarter.
UAB returns home on Tuesday, March 5 to close out its regular season against Wichita State at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
