BIRMINGHAM – Playing its fourth tournament of the season, the UAB beach volleyball team heads to Youngsville, Louisiana this weekend, March 15-16, for the Sugar Beach Bash at the Youngsville Sports Complex.
The Blazers open competition on Friday with No. 20 Tampa at 9 a.m. and South Carolina at 1 p.m., followed by Southern Miss (10 a.m.) and New Orleans (4 p.m.) on Saturday.
UAB (7-5) looks for two marquee wins this weekend and aims for its first ranked victory of the season against Tampa. The Blazers are currently 0-3 against the AVCA Top 20 this year.
The Court 2 duo of senior Jessica Ennis and freshman Isabel Day have a team-best 9-3 overall record this year and have gone 3-1 at every tournament this season. Ennis enters the weekend with 47 career victories and looks to become just the fifth player in school history to reach 50 career wins.
One of those four players currently with 50 career victories is UAB's Court 1 blocker Arden Copping, who aims to become the winningest player in program history this weekend. Copping has 56 career wins and needs two more to tie the record held by Emma Andraka (58) and three more for sole possession of first place.
Copping and her teammate Jasmine Haas are 7-4 on Court 1 this year.
UAB is 1-1 all-time against Tampa, and 1-15 against South Carolina but came within two points of beating the Gamecocks last season in Atlanta. The Blazers are 6-1 against Southern Miss and have never lost to New Orleans (5-0).
