Comeback Falls Short, UAB Falls to South Florida 72-69

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team fell short on Saturday afternoon as South Florida defeated the Blazers 72-69 inside Bartow Arena.
The Blazers (16-6, 7-3 AAC) and South Florida (14-9, 6-4 AAC) both shot 50 percent for the game.
Mia Moore scored double figures for the seventeenth time this season with 19 points on 7-of-11 shots. Maddie Walsh followed behind Moore with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting and made 4-of-6 from the 3-point range. Walsh went over 500 career points when she made a 3-pointer in the third quarter.
Denim DeShields was also in double figures with 12 points and led the team with five assists.
South Florida led for the first quarter, shooting 52 percent. DeShields scored four of UAB's eight points. The Bulls had a 17-8 advantage at the end of the first.
USF earned 20 points in the second quarter and had a 13-point advantage at 32-19. The Bulls tacked on five more points and led by 12 (37-25) at the break.
Despite UAB being down at halftime, the Blazers came out of the locker room on fire in the third quarter by putting up 24 points. Walsh led UAB with eight points and made all three field goals and both her 3-point field goal attempts.
UAB entered the fourth quarter trailing by one at 50-49. The fourth quarter featured four ties and each team leading by at most three points. The Blazers were up 67-66 with 2:03 left to go.
The Blazers had one final chance to tie the game, but Tracey Bershers' 3-point attempt was no good as South Florida held on for the victory.
The Blazers return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 7, as they travel to face Tulane. Tip is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
