BIRMINGHAM - The Blazers pick up their first series win of the 2024 season in shutout fashion. The final score was 3-0 after a really good pitching performance by Colin Daniel.
Daniel started on the pitching mound, dominating the first few innings. He retired the first nine batters he saw, using his defense to get all of those outs.
In the 2nd inning the bats came together for UAB as Jake Smallwood and Reed Latimer got on base with a single and a double. Alan Choo then grounded out to second base, scoring Smallwood. Mayes White came up to bat and reached on a fielder's choice by the pitcher. Latimer scored on that fielder's choice on a close play at home.
UAB came back in the 3rd and got another run after a throwing error by the Owls. Logan Braunschweig doubled down the left field line to get in scoring position. The Blazers had four left on base, three out of the four coming in the first three innings.
No runs would be scored after the 3rd inning because of the good pitching performance from both teams. Tanner Franklin came in for the Owls after starter Smith Pinson was pulled. Franklin pitched two innings with 2 SO, 0 W, 0 H, and 0 R.
Daniel pitched 8.0 innings with 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, and 4 SO. He gets his first win of the season facing 28 batters. Ben Aabernathy came in for relief and faced three batters, striking out one and completing the save.
UAB wins the series 2-1 and gives them some much needed momentum heading into an AAC vs SEC match-up on Tuesday night.
