Women’s Basketball Falls Short at Auburn, 69-62

AUBURN, Ala. – UAB women's basketball (5-3) fell to Auburn (7-3) by a score of 69-62 on Sunday afternoon.
Sara Bershers led the Blazers with 15 points and added nine rebounds. Maddie Walsh recorded 13 points against the Tigers. UAB shot 41 percent, while Auburn shot 44 percent on the afternoon.
The Tigers started the game scoring six straight points and would lead 14-4 with 5:38 left. The Blazers went on a 10-2 run and cut in on the Tigers lead to close out the first frame only down by two (16-14).
UAB continued its scoring run into the second quarter with a 11-2 run (21-4 run from the first frame). The Blazers had a seven-point lead at 25-18 with 5:11 on the clock. UAB shot 64 percent in the second and scored 21 points to have 35-31 lead going into halftime.
Auburn came out of the half on an 8-0 run to take back the lead 39-35, but Bershers ending the Tigers run with a 3-pointer (39-38) and began a 10-0 run for UAB. Molly Moffit gave the Blazers back the lead at 40-39 with a layup. At the third quarter media timeout, the Blazers led 47-41 with 3:39 left to play. After the timeout, Auburn scored nine points while UAB scored three to make the score 50-50 heading into the final quarter.
The Green and Gold grabbed the lead to get the scoring started in the fourth, but Auburn would tie things up once again. Jade Weathersby made a layup to give UAB the lead once more, but the Tigers answered back with a jumper. The score would tied one last time after a made free throw from Weathersby (56-56). Auburn went on a 7-0 to extend its lead 63-56. The Blazers would get within three (65-62) with 1:19 left, but the Tigers would make a layup and be fouled twice to earn a 69-62 win.
