UAB Downs Southern Illinois 75-57 to Close Out Non-conference Play

CARBONDALE, Ill. – UAB women's basketball (9-3) wrapped up non-conference with a 75-57 win at Southern Illinois (2-7) on Sunday.
Journey Armstead earned double-digits for the fourth consecutive game and led the Blazers for the second consecutive game with a season-best 19 points. Maddie Walsh recorded 17 points, while Sara Bershers registered 13 points. Jade Weathersby led in the rebound category with 12 rebounds. Rayne Tucker came away with eight points and six rebounds.
UAB had the momentum and led the first six minutes of the first. The Salukis tied the game at 11-11 before Eleecia Carter made a layup to take back the lead. Southern Illinois' Jeniah Thompson would hit a three to give SIU the lead and they would maintain it the rest of the quarter. At the end of the first, Southern Illinois led 20-17.
SIU continued its lead in the second until Carter made a free throw to put UAB up by one, but the Salukis would take it right back and keep it heading into the half. The Blazers were able to keep it tight, but Southern Illinois had a 37-35 advantage at halftime.
Coming out of the half, UAB was able to tie the score four times in the first five minutes. The Blazers tied the score 46-46 and went on a 9-0 run to be in the lead, 53-46. UAB was able to keep the momentum going and led 57-48 at the end of the third. For the third, the Green and Gold shot 58 percent and held SIU to shooting 16 percent.
UAB did not let go of the lead in the final frame and built its biggest lead at 19. The Blazers defense was able to hold the Salukis to nine points. Armstead scored seven of her 19 points in the fourth.
The Green and Gold shot 48 percent for the game and held Southern Illinois to 34 percent. UAB scored 16 points off turnovers and 32 points in the paint.

The Blazers begin conference play at home in Bartow Arena as they host Temple on Sunday, December 29 at 2 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN+.
