UAB Falls in Conference Opener to Temple, 97-74

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team (9-4, 0-1) lost to Temple (7-5, 1-0) on Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena, 97-74. The Owls led by as many as 28 points in the contest.
Eleecia Carter led the Blazers with a season-high 15 points and added five assists. Maddie Walsh recorded 13 points, and Molly Moffitt registered a season-best 10 points.
The Green and Gold shot 42 percent overall, but allowed the Owls to shoot 53 percent in the game, including 66 percent in the first half. UAB also committed 17 turnovers which hindered the offense in the loss.
Temple jumped off to an early lead and led 6-0 with 8:36 on the clock. UAB was able to get within six of the Owls, but they would then go on a 17-2 run to lead 29-9 at the 2:34 mark and led 34-16 after one.
In the second quarter, the Owls continued to extend their lead with a 10-0 run and had their biggest lead at 47-19 with 5:58 left. The Blazers went on an 8-0 run late in the second to cut into Temple's lead but trailed 55-37 at the half.
Temple opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run and led by 23 at the 5:19 mark. The Owls continued to maintain a large lead and matched their biggest lead at 28 with 48 seconds left in the third, but Carter hit a three with two seconds left. At the end of the third Temple had a 25-point lead at 78-53.
The Blazers scored 21 points in the final frame, but the Owls continued their red-hot shooting in the fourth to earn the victory.

UAB heads to San Antonio, Texas, for their first conference road test at UTSA on Wednesday, January 1. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and will air live on ESPN+.
