Blazers Let Big Lead Slip Away Against Arkansas State

BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball (5-6) led Arkansas State (9-3) by 25 points at halftime but could not hang on for the win in a 98-89 overtime defeat.
The Blazers put together their best half of the season over the first 20 minutes. UAB hit seven three-pointers and got to the free throw line consistently while forcing 11 Arkansas State turnovers.
After Kobe Julien converted on a three-point play with 15:12 in the first half, the Blazers took over. UAB went on a 30-3 run over the next eight minutes to hold a 41-17 advantage at the 7:16 mark in the first half.
Tyren Moore sparked the Blazers with four first half threes while Yaxel Lendeborg and Efrem "Butta" Johnson each reached double figures before the break. While UAB was scoring efficiently in the first half, the tone was set on the defensive end.
Arkansas State's 28 first half points were the Red Wolves' lowest total in a single half this season. UAB held Arkansas State without a field goal for over six minutes during the Blazers' run.
The second half was a different story for UAB, as the Red Wolves were able to get to the basket often and knock down shots from outside. Led by Taryn Todd and Kobe Julien, who each had 17 points in the second half, the Red Wolves shot nearly 60 percent from the field after the break.
Arkansas State went on a 16-2 run beginning at the 11:41 mark to cut UAB's lead to just two points with 6:40 to go. After Tyren Moore hit a three to put the Blazers back up by five, the Red Wolves scored seven straight to take their first lead of the night.
The Blazers trailed by three with one minute to go. Tyren Moore cut the deficit to just one with 36 seconds remaining and Arkansas State went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to make it a two-point game with 22 seconds to go. Alejandro Vasquez found Yaxel Lendeborg under the basketball for a dunk to tie the game with eight seconds left and Julien's jumper was off target on the other end to send the game to overtime tied at 84.
In overtime, Arkansas State led from start to finish. With the Red Wolves leading by five, Tyren Moore knocked down a three with 1:23 to go to cut the lead to just two. On the ensuing possession, Arkansas State was able to get an offensive rebound and Todd hit a three to extend the lead back to five. UAB could not respond, and Arkansas State took the 98-89 overtime win.
