BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball fell 67-62 to Vermont in its home opener on Monday night. Yaxel Lendeborg led the Blazers with 22 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks in the loss.
The Blazers could not hit a shot from beyond the arc, going 0-for-10 on the night from three while Vermont was 10-for-27. The Catamounts never trailed in the contest despite UAB's second half comeback.

The second half was a different story for Lendeborg. He scored UAB's first four points of the period and sparked a 14-2 run for the Blazers to start the half. During the run, UAB held Vermont scoreless for 5:30 of the clock.
The drought was ended by TJ Hurley heave from the logo as the shot clock was beginning to expire, putting Vermont back ahead by five. The Catamounts hit another three on the ensuing possession to put the score at 46-38.
Lendeborg tied the game up at 46 at the 9:05 mark, but the Catamounts were able to bank in a three late in the shot clock with a foul for a four-point play. On the next possession, Vermont again banked in a three to go ahead 53-46.
Once again, UAB did not go away. A 9-2 UAB run sparked by Ja'Borri McGhee and Yaxel Lendeborg tied the game up at 55 with just 3:53 remaining. Vermont once again hit a three to prevent the Blazers from taking the lead.
At the 1:23 mark, Christian Coleman had a huge and-one in the lane that tied the game up at 60-60 after his free throw.
Hurley again came through for the Catamounts, banking in a short jumper to put UVM ahead 62-60. The Blazers had a pair of three-point attempts on the next possession but could not convert.
