UAB Defeats Shorter 72-64 in Exhibition Contest

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team faced Shorter in an exhibition on Wednesday night and picked up a 72-64 win over the Hawks.
Sara Bershers led the Blazers with 24 points and two other players reached double figures. Graduate forward, Rayne Tucker, added a double-double on the night.
Shorter was the first to score with 8:34 left in the first quarter. Both teams went back and forth scoring, but UAB went on a 6-0 scoring run and finished the first quarter in the lead at 16-8.
The Blazers went on a 3-0 run to open the second quarter, forcing Shorter to call a timeout. Bershers, Rayne, Journey Armstead and Ashton Elley combined for 13 points to give UAB a 29-27 advantage and it was lead the Blazers would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
UAB opened the second half on an 5-2 run to extend its lead to 41-32. Bershers scored 14 of the Blazers 27 points in the third quarter.
The Green and Gold led by eight (56-48) after three, but Shorter went on a 4-0 run early in the fourth and got within three at 58-55 with 6:54 left in the contest. However, UAB's defense held Shorter without a field goal for the next three minutes. The Blazers scored 14 more points to earn a 72-64 win.
UP NEXT
The Blazers will host West Alabama on Monday, November 4 at noon at Bartow Arena for the season opener.
