Weathersby Scores 20 to Lead UAB Past West Alabama, 78-47

BIRMINGHAM – Sophomore forward Jade Weathersby scored 20 points to lead the UAB women's basketball team to a 78-47 victory over West Alabama on Monday to open the 2024-25 season.
Weathersby scored 11 of her career-high 20 points in the first half and added 12 rebounds on the afternoon for her second career double-double.
Along with Weathersby, three other players score in double figures. Sara Bershers contributed 13 points and five rebounds while Rayne Tucker recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Maddie Walsh registered 10 points against the Tigers.
In Journey Armstead's first game as a Blazer, she put up nine points, seven assists and six rebounds.
UAB shot 44 percent and out rebounded the Tigers 56-38. The Blazers' defense only allowed West Alabama to shoot 29 percent on the afternoon.
The Tigers were the first on the board and would lead only one more time at 5-4 for the game with 8:09 left to play in the first. UAB found its rhythm and went on a 13-0 run to extend its lead 17-5 with 3:27 left to play. The Blazers closed out the first quarter up by eight (22-14).
The Green and Gold scored 13 more points in the second quarter, with Weathersby leading the Blazers with eight points in the second. UAB headed into the half leading 35-27.
The Blazers built their biggest lead in the fourth quarter at 33 and would score 43 points in the second half. UAB scored 54 of their points in the paint and had 16 points off turnovers in the 78-47 win.

The Blazers will face their first road test of the season as they head to Alabama A&M on Tuesday, November 12. Tipoff is set for 5:30 CT.
