Volleyball Splits Weekend; Wins Five Set Thriller

BIRMINGHAM - UAB wins a wild five set game against Tulane after being down 2-1. The Blazers also played UTSA on Friday dropping the match 3-0.
Four players went for double-digit kills in the game in San Antonio including two for each team. Jorda Crook had a game high of 14 kills.
UTSA jumped out to a 8-3 lead after a kill by Kai Bailey. UAB tied the game at 10 behind a three point scoring streak including two kills by Crook. The Roadrunners took advantage of a service error to win the set 25-22. UAB stayed with UTSA in the second set, until the Roadrunners took a 20-14 lead. Once again UAB fought to make the set close at 25-21. UTSA finished the sweep with a 25-19 third set win. UTSA outhit the Blazers .320 to .202 resulting in six less errors.
The next game against Tulane this afternoon was very competitive and felt like it might go the distance.
A 15-7 lead was opened up after back to back blocks by UAB. The Blazers dominated the first set with four total blocks and only two hitting errors. UAB wins set one 25-14. Tulane jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the second set forcing UAB into both of their timeouts. This time it was three blocks and only three hitting errors by Tulane that propelled the Green Wave to a set two win 25-22. Tulane continued to dominate with a 25-13 third set. UAB grabbed an early lead 9-6 forcing Tulane into a timeout. Jorda Crook had five kills while Chloe Rodriguez added four in the fourth set. Rodriguez also added three block assists in route to a 25-20 fourth set win. UAB forced an early timeout by Tulane with a 6-4 lead. Mia Reese finished the fifth set off with a kill down the left hand line that came from Kelsey Smith.
Chloe Rodriguez had this to say after the game "Everyone was playing together. We kept on saying we had no doubt in our minds that we could go out and get it and that's exactly what we did." Rodriguez was phenomenal in the win over Tulane with 11 kills and six blocks.
UAB heads to the Midwest next weekend to face Tulsa and Wichita State.
