Charlotte Uses Big Second Half to Defeat UAB, 91-69

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a tale of two halves, the UAB women's basketball team fell on the road at Charlotte Sunday afternoon by the score of 91-69.
The Blazers (11-4, 2-1 AAC) made 11 first half 3-pointers and built a seven-point halftime lead (47-40), but Charlotte (10-5, 3-0 AAC) outscored the Blazers 51-22 in the second half en route to the 22-point victory.
UAB made 14-of-25 from behind the arc for the game and shot 45 percent overall, but allowed the 49ers to shoot 50 percent in the contest, including 54 percent in the second half. UAB also committed 23 turnovers which hindered the offense in the loss.
Tracey Bershers led the Blazers with 18 points on 6-of-9 from long range, while Mia Moore (16), Maddie Walsh (11) and Denim DeShields (11) also reached double figures. However, UAB could not slow down the league's fifth leading scorer Dazia Lawrence who had 30 points. Tracey Hueston contributed 19 points off the bench for Charlotte.
Moore scored seven early points for the Blazers but Charlotte led 10-9 at the first media timeout of the game due to six early UAB turnovers. The Blazers caught fire coming out of that timeout and ultimately shot 71.4 percent in the first quarter, including all six 3-point attempts, and led 28-22 after one.
UAB continued its hot shooting and made back-to-back triples to open the second, forcing a Charlotte timeout at the 8:39 mark of the second with UAB leading 34-22.
The Blazers ultimate made their first nine 3-pointers, and Maddie Walsh's rainbow three gave UAB its largest lead at 40-24, but Charlotte then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 10 (40-30) with 5:22 left, forcing a UAB timeout.
Charlotte got within four, but UAB led 47-40 at the break behind 11 made 3-pointers in the first half.
The 49ers opened the third quarter on a 10-1 run and a layup by Imani Smith gave Charlotte its first lead since it was 15-14, forcing a UAB timeout at the 7:59 mark with the 49ers leading 50-48. Charlotte scored the next nine points which was during a 16-0 run and the 49ers ultimately outscored UAB 30-12 in the quarter and led 70-59 after three.
The 49ers continued their red-hot shooting in the fourth and outscored UAB 21-10 in the frame to pull away for the victory.
UAB returns to action on Wednesday night at East Carolina. Tip is set for 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m CT on ESPN+.
