GREENVILLE, N.C. – A career-high 24 points from senior forward Maddie Walsh lifted the UAB women's basketball team to a 73-64 road victory at East Carolina on Wednesday night in Greenville.
Walsh led three players in double figures and made 9-of-16 shots, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range. Sophomore guard Denim DeShields, who leads the AAC in assists per game, tied a career high with 11 assists to go along with eight points.
Tracey Bershers scored 14 points while Molly Moffitt added 12 as UAB shot 47 percent for the game. Freshman Jade Weathersby just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Led by DeShields, the Blazers assisted on 23 of their 28 baskets and UAB made 13 3-pointers. Despite not having Mia Moore, the team's leader in points and rebounds, UAB (12-4, 3-1 AAC) was able to hand East Carolina (9-5, 2-1 AAC) its first home loss of the season.
"What a great team win on the road, especially with all the adversity our players have been through with injuries and travel challenges this week. I am really proud of all of them," Head Coach Randy Norton said.
The Blazers weathered an early 13-2 ECU run and got within four (17-13) at the end of the first quarter.
UAB outscored ECU 14-13 the second quarter and the two teams went into the locker room with ECU leading 30-27. Walsh (10) and Bershers (8) combined for 18 of UAB's 27 points and DeShields had six first half assists.
The Blazers took over in the third quarter by outscoring the Pirates 29-17 to gain a nine-point advantage (56-47) entering the fourth. UAB shot 68 percent in the frame and Walsh had 11 of her 24 in the third.
As ECU tried to make a run early in the fourth, two big 3-pointers from Ashton Elley kept the Pirates at a distance as UAB earned its second AAC road win of the season.
ECU was paced by Danae McNeal with 18 points and Amiya Joyner who had 16 points and 15 rebounds.
The Blazers return home to Bartow Arena on Sunday, Jan. 14, to host SMU at 2 p.m.
