BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team returns to Bartow Arena this Sunday, Jan. 14, to host SMU. Tip is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Blazers are coming off a road win at East Carolina which improved their overall record to 12-4 and they are now 3-1 in the AAC. SMU is 8-7 overall and 2-2 in league play after a 91-86 double overtime victory at Memphis.
Maddie Walsh is coming off a career high 24 points at ECU and has now scored in double figures each of her last five games and seven of her last eight overall. She is averaging 12.6 points per game during that stretch and has emerged as a consistent scoring threat from the power forward position.
UAB assisted on 23 of their 28 made baskets at ECU, led by point guard Denim DeShields who tied her career high with 11. DeShields has led the AAC in assists all season long and enters the game averaging 5.6 per game, which ranks 30th nationally.
The Blazers have been tremendous at defending the 3-point line, entering the game ranked 13th nationally by allowing opponents to make just 24.3 percent from long range. SMU leads the AAC in 3-point field goal percentage at 36.8 percent which is 24th nationally and sets up a key matchup in determining the outcome of the game.
UAB shoots the ball well from long range as well, ranking second in the league and 27th nationally at 36.4 percent. Tracey Bershers leads the way at 44.1 percent which ranks her 30th nationally. Despite not qualifying nationally due to not enough attempts, Mia Moore has made 14-of-27 from 3-point range (51.9) and Maddie Walsh is shooting 38.7 percent (29-of-75), but during her eight-game stretch she is 24-of-47 (51.0).
Following the game on Sunday, UAB is off until Jan. 21 when they host UTSA in Birmingham.
