UAB Faces Charlotte With First Place on the Line

BIRMINGHAM – With first place in the American Athletic Conference standings on the line, the UAB women's basketball team travels to Charlotte for a contest this Sunday, Jan. 7, at Halton Arena. Tip is set for 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
Both the Blazers (11-3) and the 49ers (9-5) enter the game at 2-0 in the AAC standings and the winner will take possession of first place in the league standings.
UAB is coming off a thrilling 65-63 victory over Memphis in which Denim DeShields scored a team high 20 points and found Maddie Walsh for the go-ahead 3-pointer with :38 seconds remaining. DeShields is averaging 18.0 ppg over her last two games, and she continues to lead the AAC in assists per game (5.14).
Walsh has emerged as a consistent scoring threat, having reached double figures in five of her last six games. During that stretch, Walsh is averaging 11.0 points per game and is shooting 51.6 percent from long range (16-of-31).
Sophomore guard Mia Moore continues to dominate on the glass and is coming off a career-best 17 rebounds against Memphis. She added 15 points for her league-leading eighth double-double of the season. Moore is averaging an AAC-best 10.5 rebounds per game, and at 5-foot-6, has tallied eight double-figure rebounding games this season and has had no less than eight rebounds in each of her last 12 games. She also averages a team-high 16.8 points per game.
Charlotte has defeated North Texas and South Florida early on in the conference schedule to set up a first-place showdown. Dazia Lawrence is the league's fifth leading scorer at 17.4 points per game while Tracey Hueston also averages double figures (11.3). Charlotte allows just 59.4 points per game which is the second-best average in the league.
