UAB Women’s Basketball to Host UTSA on Sunday

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team looks to keep its momentum going on Sunday, Jan. 21, as the Blazers host UTSA. Tip is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
Having won two in a row and four of their last five, the Blazers enter the game at 13-4 overall and 4-1 in league play. UTSA, who is on a four-game winning streak, is 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the AAC.
UAB has had a week off since its last game, which was an 84-75 victory over SMU. The Blazers had five players score in double figures against the Mustangs, led by Denim DeShields who had a season-high 31 points.
In two games last week, DeShields averaged 19.5 points and 8.0 assists. Over her last five games DeShields is averaging 17.2 points per game and has increased her overall scoring average to 11.5 points per game. In addition, she continues to lead the American in assists per game at 5.5.
Her backcourt mate Mia Moore notched her AAC-best ninth double-double of the season against SMU with 10 points and 10 rebounds. In 16 games this season, Moore has reached double figures 14 times and is averaging a double-double with 16.3 points and a league-high 10.0 rebounds per game.
Moore's stellar play this season is gaining national attention as she was just recently named to the Becky Hammon Player of the Year Midseason Watch List and was the only player from the AAC recognized.
UTSA started league play at 0-2 but has since reeled of four straight wins over Wichita State, Florida Atlantic, Charlotte and South Florida. The Roadrunners are a well-balanced team that has four players average double figures, led by Elyssa Coleman at 11.6 per game. Coleman also leads the team in rebounds at 7.5 per game.
